As autumn swings around, festivities, parties and low temperatures follow close behind. Although you may want to bundle up indoors, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy your garden in the cooler months. Here are some tips on how to create a garden space that’s ready for all your upcoming home parties and celebrations.
Freshen up the lawn
After these past few months of enduring sunny weather and heavy footfall, your lawn may need a touch of TLC. Early autumn is the ideal time for bringing your home’s lawn back to life. During this moderate season, the grass varieties naturally hit their stride for optimal growth and nature works in your favour.
Start by pulling up any weeds that crept up over the summer while you were busy relaxing. Weeds compete for water, light and nutrients and they could be the reason behind your garden looking a little drab. Avoid weed killers as they inhibit new grass as well as weeds. You should always allow at least three weeks between weed treatments and lawn boosting.
Outdoor lighting
Whether you’re hosting a casual lunchtime gathering or a cosy night party around the fireplace, outdoor lighting adds a touch of magic and festivity. Accentuate your outdoor tables and seating areas with hanging fairy lights, glowing lanterns and ambient floor lights.
Give the patio a power shower
A little bit of high-pressure water is all you need to bring your patio back to life. Work smarter, not harder this summer and use a jet washer to freshen up all the nooks and crannies in your garden. For decking, put the washer on its lowest pressure and leave some distance between the nozzle and decking boards – that way, you won’t strip any of the paint off.
Clean the barbeque
If you’re planning on making the most of this year’s last few rays of sun, clean your barbeque just before any guests come over, so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises when you next open the lid. Use a wire brush or scourer to clean burnt food off the metal racks, then wash the whole thing with hot soapy water.
Add a centrepiece
If you have a square patch of lawn in your garden, creating a raised centrepiece will make your home unforgettable as doing this adds a focal point and something interesting to look at. You can achieve this look by filling a wooden edged centre circle with bright colourful flowers. Other great centrepieces include bird baths, small trees, cottage-style filled wheelbarrows and mini water features.
Set up an outdoor bar
Setting up a bar outside is a simple way to impress your guests and add that extra special something to your garden. There are countless ways to set up a bar area in your garden, and the materials you need are completely up to your own imagination.
Set up a shaded area
Prepare you garden for all weather by setting up a shaded area. Plan ahead of your party and rent out a gazebo or canopy to keep your guests cool and dry. Shade sails and outdoor parasols are great options if you’re looking to section off spaces in your garden and provide people with options on where they want to gather.
Create a seating circle
There’s nothing cosier than gathering around a fire on a dark evening. Place your garden furniture in a circle with a fire pit in the centre, add fluffy cushions, blankets and rugs for an outdoor living-room feel that makes your guests feel right at home.
